Data Privacy Policy
We collect as little data as possible. Here's exactly what we take, why we take it, and what we do with it.

Who We Are
Nippon Predict LLC is a Washington State limited liability company registered in the United States. Our registered address is 1918 8th Ave, Suite 400, Seattle, WA 98101. We operate the website nipponpredict.com and provide weather forecast information for Tokyo's microclimates. Rei Nakamura is the founder and data controller for purposes of this policy.
What Data We Collect
We collect three categories of data: analytics data from website visitors, contact form submissions, and cookie preferences. That's it. We don't have user accounts, we don't collect location data from your device, and we don't use third-party tracking scripts.
Analytics Data
We use a self-hosted analytics system (Plausible Analytics, running on our own infrastructure) that collects the following information when you visit our website: the page URL you visited, the HTTP referer (the page that sent you to us, if any), your browser type and operating system (derived from your user agent string), your device type (desktop or mobile, derived from screen size), and your country (derived from your IP address, which is discarded immediately after geolocation and never stored).
We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party analytics service that would share your data with external companies. Our analytics system does not use cookies, does not track you across websites, and does not create a persistent identifier. We cannot and do not track individual users across sessions.
Contact Form Data
When you submit the contact form on our website, we collect the name, email address, topic, and message that you voluntarily provide. This data is sent to us via email and stored in our support ticket system. We use this information solely to respond to your inquiry. We do not add your email address to any mailing list without explicit consent, and we do not share contact information with third parties.
We retain contact form submissions indefinitely because they contain valuable feedback about our forecasts that we reference when improving our models. If you want your contact form submission deleted, email us at forecast@nipponpredict.com and we'll remove it within 30 days.
Cookie Preferences
When you interact with our cookie consent banner, we store your preference (accept or decline) in your browser's localStorage. This is a client-side storage mechanism — the preference never leaves your device and is not transmitted to our servers. If you clear your browser's localStorage, you'll see the cookie banner again on your next visit.
What Data We Don't Collect
We want to be explicit about what we don't do. We do not collect: precise geolocation data from your device; IP addresses (our server sees them for operational purposes but they are not logged or stored); browsing history from other websites; demographic information such as age, gender, or income; device identifiers or advertising IDs; or payment information (we don't process payments on this website).
We also do not use fingerprinting techniques, social media widgets, embedded content that tracks you, or any technology designed to identify you across different websites or devices.
How We Use Your Data
Analytics data is used to understand which pages are most visited, which forecast products are most popular, and whether our website is functioning correctly. We use this information to prioritize development work — for example, if we see that the hourly shifts page is heavily trafficked, we know to invest more in expanding district coverage.
Contact form data is used exclusively to respond to your inquiry. If you report a forecast error, we use the details you provide to investigate and potentially correct our models. We may reference your report (anonymized) in our public correction log.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to anyone. We do not share your data with third parties except in the following limited circumstances: (1) if required by law, such as in response to a valid court order or subpoena from a court with jurisdiction over Nippon Predict LLC in Washington State; (2) to protect our rights or safety, such as investigating potential fraud or security issues; (3) in connection with a business transfer, such as a merger or acquisition, in which case we would notify you before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
Our website does not embed third-party content (YouTube videos, social media feeds, etc.) that could track you. We don't use content delivery networks that log visitor data. The Open-Meteo API we use for weather data is called from your browser directly, not through our servers, so your IP address is not exposed to us during API requests.
Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the data we collect. Our website is served over HTTPS (TLS 1.2 or higher) to encrypt data in transit. Our servers are hosted with reputable providers and are kept up to date with security patches. Access to contact form submissions and analytics data is limited to the three team members listed on our about page.
However, no internet transmission is completely secure. We cannot guarantee the security of data transmitted to our website, and any transmission is at your own risk. We have not experienced a data breach since our founding, but if one occurs, we will notify affected users as required by applicable law.
Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights regarding your personal data. Under the Washington State Consumer Data Privacy Act (effective March 2024), Washington residents have the right to: confirm whether we process your personal data; access the personal data we hold about you; correct inaccuracies in your personal data; delete your personal data; and obtain a copy of your personal data in a portable format.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at forecast@nipponpredict.com with the subject line "Data Privacy Request." We will respond within 45 days of receiving your request. We do not charge a fee for processing privacy requests unless they are manifestly unfounded or excessive.
If you are located in the European Union or United Kingdom, you may have additional rights under the GDPR or UK GDPR, including the right to object to processing and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Please note that we are a US-based company and process data primarily in the United States.
Data Retention
Analytics data is retained for 24 months, after which it is automatically deleted. Contact form submissions are retained indefinitely unless you request deletion. Cookie preferences are stored in your browser's localStorage and persist until you clear your browser data.
Children's Privacy
Our website is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected data from a child, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
International Data Transfers
Nippon Predict LLC is based in the United States. If you access our website from outside the US, your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States, which may have different data protection laws than your country. By using our website, you consent to this transfer.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy on this page with a revised "last updated" date. If we make material changes, we will notify users by posting a notice on our homepage. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
